At this level, the learner is able to understand and use very common everyday expressions, as well as simple phrases designed to meet immediate needs. They can introduce themselves and others, and ask for and give basic personal information about their home, their belongings and the people they know. They can communicate at a basic level provided that the person they are speaking to speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to cooperate.

At this level, the learner has some prior knowledge of the target language. They are able to understand frequently used phrases and expressions relating to areas of experience that are particularly relevant to them. They can communicate when carrying out simple, everyday tasks that require no more than straightforward and direct exchanges of information on familiar or routine matters. They can describe, in simple terms, aspects of their past and their surroundings, as well as matters relating to their immediate needs. As educators, it is our duty to review this established knowledge.

At this level, the learner has a more extensive prior knowledge of the target language. They are able to understand the main points of clear, standard-language texts on topics familiar to them, whether in work, study or leisure contexts. They are able to produce simple, coherent texts on topics that are familiar to them or in which they have a personal interest. They can describe experiences, events, wishes and aspirations, as well as briefly justify their opinions or explain their plans.

At this level, the learner has a good and more extensive prior knowledge of the target language. They are able to understand the main ideas in complex texts dealing with both concrete and abstract topics, including technical texts, provided these fall within their field of specialisation. They can interact with native speakers with a sufficient degree of fluency and naturalness. They can produce clear and detailed texts on a variety of topics, as well as defend a point of view.

At this level, learners are able to understand a wide variety of lengthy and somewhat demanding texts, as well as to recognise implicit meanings within them. Learners can express themselves fluently and spontaneously. They can use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. They can produce clear, well-structured and detailed texts on topics of some complexity.

They can easily understand virtually everything they hear or read. They are able to synthesise information and arguments from a variety of sources, whether spoken or written, and present them in a coherent and summarised manner. They can express themselves spontaneously and with great fluency.
