Course objectives
Historically, ports have been integral to trade and the geographical expansion of civilisations, contributing to the development and military and commercial dominance of the cultures that established them.
In their modern sense, commercial ports are hubs within logistics chains that include a maritime transport leg, facilitating the modal transfer of goods and people between ships and land-based transport modes: rail and road. To fulfil their mission, ports provide the services of shelter and protection for ships and the exchange of goods and passengers that in the past were the reason for their existence, but also others such as handling, storage, administrative control, logistics, etc., as a result of the evolution of international trade and transport.
The aim of this course is to understand what Port Services consist of and how they are managed, and their significance not only for port activity but also for supply chains involving a maritime transport leg.
This general objective is divided into the following specific objectives:
- To introduce the basic principles of port management
- To identify the main port customers and port operators that make up the port community
- Understand what port services are and how they are classified
- Learn about the different forms of port service management
- Gain an overview of the influence of port tariffs on port costs
Each of these objectives is covered in a separate topic. The relevant objective is detailed at the start of each topic.
