Fundación Valenciaport participates in the first automatic fast-charging system for ships, as part of the Hypobatt project

  • The project addresses one of the major challenges of electrification: how to recharge large batteries in the shortest possible time so as not to disrupt the flow of operations
  • The practical experience gained through HYPOBATT will have a direct impact on the regulation of the sector, serving as the basis for the drafting of the international standard IEC/IEEE 80005-4

Valencia, 2 November 2026.- The European HYPOBATT project – Hyper-powered Vessel Battery Charging System – has come to an end following the successful development and testing of the Marine Megawatt Charging System (M-MCS), an ultra-fast charging solution for ships.

This initiative, co-funded by the Horizon Europe programme, addresses one of the major challenges of maritime electrification: how to recharge large batteries within the short time a ship spends in port without disrupting the flow of operations.

The system has been tested under real-world conditions in a 1 MW pilot project at the port of Frisia (Germany), demonstrating for the first time the feasibility of fast charging using both automatic and manual connection systems. Furthermore, thanks to its modular and scalable design, the technology will be capable of delivering power outputs of up to 2.25 MW, paving the way for the electrification of vessels with higher energy requirements.

As part of the initiative, Fundación Valenciaport has led the studies into replicability and technical and economic feasibility, setting out how to adapt and implement this technology efficiently and cost-effectively in different port environments and business models.

Furthermore, the practical experience gained during the project is having a direct impact on the regulation of the sector, serving as the basis for the drafting of the future international standard IEC/IEEE 80005-4, which will set global standards for direct current electrical connections between ships and the shore.

Following the conclusion of the HYPOBATT project, Fundación Valenciaport will pass on all this knowledge to the port community and the business sector, facilitating the adoption of these solutions to move towards emission-free maritime transport.
